Partial knee replacement is an option for patients with very localized damage to one part of the knee joint - most frequently the medial (inside) part. Patients benefit from a smaller incision, better motion and a quicker recovery than standard total knee replacement.
Patellofemoral replacement
Patellofemoral replacement is also a partial replacement, specifically for the treatment of arthritis localized to the area of the knee behind the patella (kneecap).
Total knee replacement
Total knee replacement is the standard procedure for the treatment of advanced osteoarthritis. In this procedure, all parts of the knee joint are replaced with metal and plastic inserts, similar to crowning a tooth.
This recently developed replacement technology are manufactured specifically for the individual patient based on a CT or MRI scan. It offers the benefit of being more bone preserving than traditional joint replacements.
